The Achmea Group was formed by the mergers and acquisitions of numerous mutual and cooperative insurance providers over a period of almost two centuries. Today, it is one of the leading Dutch and European insurers, building on a strong tradition of cooperation with like-minded insurers.

2011

  • Eureko renamed to Achmea.
  • Eureko closes sale of Avéro Belgium Insurance to Baloise.
  • Eureko closes sale of Império France to SMABTP group.

2010

  • Eureko and the Polish State Treasury sell 30% of PZU shares via an IPO  on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.
  • Subsequently, Eureko divested its remaining 15% stake in PZU.
  • Eureko sells Interlife, Cyprus to Rodardo.

2009

  • Rabobank and Eureko agree to intensify their cooperation on commercial  bancassurance. 
  • Interamerican Romania (part of the Eureko Group since 2001) officially  re-brands to take its parent’s name, Eureko, at the beginning of February.

2008

  • Eureko announces the acquisition of the Oranta Insurance Company in Russia.

2007

  • Eureko acquires 80% of life insurance company Eureko Sigorta from Garanti  bank, both in Turkey. 
  • Achmea and Dutch health insurer Agis merge.

2006

  • Eureko launches a health insurance company in Slovakia, attracting a large  number of new clients.

2005

  • Rabobank becomes Eureko’s second largest shareholder following the merger  of Interpolis (Rabobank’s Dutch insurance subsidiary) with Achmea.

2004

  • Rabobank acquires a 5% stake in Eureko.  
  • Eureko merges its asset management company, F&C, with ISIS.  
  • Levob joins Achmea, further strengthening the group’s broker and  banking activities in the Netherlands.

2003

  • Eureko and Achmea Holdings integrate, setting up Executive and Supervisory  Boards on which they are equally represented.

2002

  • Achmea acquires a large part of the insurance activities of Royal & Sun  Alliance in the Netherlands and Belgium, thereby expanding its activities in  Belgium. These activities were later integrated in Avéro Insurance Belgium.

2001

  • Eureko acquires Foreign & Colonial Management Ltd (later renamed F&C). 
  • Eureko takes a majority stake in Interamerican, a leading insurer in Greece.  This deal included a majority stake in Interamerican in Romania and Bulgaria,  and Interlife Cyprus.

2000

  • The Eureko Alliance restructures, creating the Eureko Group and Eurapco  (the European Alliance Partners Company).

1999

  • Eureko BV acquires a 30% stake in Polish insurer PZU S.A., based on the  Polish government’s decision and promise to privatise the company via an IPO.

1998

  • Achmea merges with the pension services and asset management company  PVF Nederland.

1995

  • The Achmea Group is officially founded following the merger of Zilveren Kruis  and AVCB.

1986

  • Avéro Insurance is founded as a result of several Dutch mutual insurers  forming a merger.

1982

  • EuroCross International is founded, offering worldwide assistance 24 hours  a day. At launch, it operated on just one phone line.

1956

  • Mutual insurer FBTO (Friesche Boeren en Tuinders Onderlinge) is founded for  Frisian farmers and and agrarians.

1949

  • Dutch healthcare insurance company Zilveren Kruis is founded.

1909

  • A group of mutual risk associations get together to form the Coöperatieve  Vereniging Centraal Beheer.

1811

  • The history of Eureko’s largest operating company, Achmea, begins as  Onderlinge Brand Assurantie Sociëteit (Achlum), founded by accountant  Ulbe Piers Draisma.
